Plastic waste is omnipresent, the pollution in the environment easily recognisable. This makes the topic relevant even for the youngest children. That is why the Ecologic Institute, within the BMBF research focus "Plastic in the Environment", together with the AOK-Bundesverband, Stiftung Lesen and Carlsen K - the children's media agency of Carlsen Verlag - developed an exclusive Lesemaus edition especially for kindergartens.

Under the title "The Treasure Hunt", children can follow a story about how a treasure hunt in the kindergarten group's sandbox turns into an intensive examination of the topic of plastics. With the help of the teachers, the children explore where plastic waste is floating around in our environment, where all the plastic comes from and how pollution of the environment can be prevented.

Within the framework of this cooperation with Stiftung Lesen, the special editions of Lesemaus will be made available to all kindergartens nationwide in duplicate for their work with preschool children. With the story and suitable activity ideas, educators can inspire the children in their kindergartens for this important topic in a playful way. In addition, parents at home are also reached who read the book with their children and thus deal with the issue of plastic in the environment.

Whether or not microplastics have harmful effects on plants and animals has not yet been conclusively established. The different properties of microplastics determine whether and how the microplastics are absorbed by living organisms and whether they are harmful to them.

Compared to other pollutants in the environment (e.g. pesticides), microplastics do not have a uniform effect on living organisms. In addition, the effects of microplastics often cannot be distinguished from the harmful effects of other particles and substances found in the environment.

Beschreibung

In addition to research on the current topic of microplastics, the dissemination of knowledge to the public is an important matter. Within the framework of the project, we have succeeded in developing teaching materials with which the examination of the topic can be realised from the 1st to the 12th grade. For free download, we offer simple, short experiments, teaching units lasting several hours as well as a project design for use in P or W seminars during the school year.

As part of the joint project MikroPlaTaS, a travelling exhibition on the topic of microplastics and plastics has been developed especially for use in schools. In addition to presenting basic information on the use, distribution routes and effects of plastics, the exhibition also presents the research team's own project results. The aim of the exhibition is to inform pupils about plastics in the environment. The main focus is on the question of why a large proportion of the tiny particles are deposited in waterlogged areas.

In addition to project days, it can also be used in biology or chemistry lessons (upper secondary level). A handout is also available for teachers with suggestions and explanations for integrating the exhibition into the curriculum. The travelling exhibition can be sent and used throughout Germany.

Furthermore, the category "Questions for adults & children" contains questions suited for children.

The quiz was developed within this research focus. The quiz is available on this website and is suitable for all common browsers on computers and mobile devices.

This PIXI book was created in the context of "Plastics in the Environment". It tells the story of Samia, Johann and their babysitter Tom, who discover a seagull tangled up in a plastic bag on a riverside. Tom explains to them how plastics gets from land to sea, how long it remains in nature and how to avoid plastic in everyday life with simple decisions.
