The international conference provided an opportunity to learn and exchange knowledge on the topic of microplastics in soils and was aimed at scientists and decision-makers alike. The first day of the event focused on the state of the science, the second day on identifying technical options and political fields of action at the European and international level.

Research has shown that soils are a major sink for microplastics. A lot is known about microplastics in water, but there are still large gaps in research on plastics in soils, especially regarding the determination, distribution, transport and impacts of microplastic particles.

This two-day international conference featured the following topics:

Day 1: State of science
a. Pathways of entries and occurrence of plastic in soils
b. Behavior, fate, and impact of microplastics in soils
c. Analysis of microplastics in soils

Day 2: Need for action by policy makers
d. Technical and management solutions reducing plastic emissions into soils
e. Existing regulations affecting plastics in soils
f. Policy solutions at the European and international level
The conference will serve as an input for developing policy recommendations.

This hybrid event took place on 19 and 20 October, 2022 allowing for both in-person and online participation. The event was aimed at scientists and decision-makers.

Beschreibung

This status report was prepared within the framework of the cross-cutting topic 1 "Analytics and reference materials" of the research focus. It summarizes the contents of the project discussions and coordination within the cross-cutting issue. The organization of this ongoing process of development or elaboration has been supported by several events.

The status report presents a summary of the physicochemical methods for the analysis of MP used in the research focus "Plastics in the Environment". The present recommendations are based on the current state of knowledge of the analysis of MP and are directed at actors in science as well as potential users in practice.

Scientists from the following collaborative projects of the research focus participated in the preparation of the status report via workshops, contributions and feedback loops: EmiStop, ENSURE, MicBin, MicroCatch_Balt, MikroPlaTaS, PLASTRAT, PLAWES, RAU, REPLAWA, RUSEKU, SubμTrack and TextileMission as well as the two predecessor projects MiWa and BASEMAN.

New Special Issue entitled "Nano and Micro Plastic Detection and Identification in Water". Shaping EU Plastic Policies: The Role of Public Health vs. Environmental Arguments. Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health 2019, 16, 3928.

The submission deadline is 31 January 2022 and papers may be submitted immediately or at any point until 31 January 2022 , as papers will be published on an ongoing basis.

Water is fully open access. Manuscripts are peer-reviewed and a first decision provided to authors approximately 17.86 days after submission. An Article Processing Charge (APC) of CHF 2000 currently applies to all accepted papers.

Microplastics are small particles of plastic less than 5mm in size; nanoplastics are even smaller, ranging from 1 to 100 nanometres (N.B. 1 nanometre equals one-millionth of a millimetre).

In 2016, EFSA identified the need to generate more data on their occurrence levels in food and on their potential effects on human health following exposure. Recently, international reports on microplastics and nanoplastics have been published, yet many of the food safety aspects remain unaddressed.

Public concern about this topic is high. EFSA’s 2019 Eurobarometer on Food Safety in the EU found that microplastics in food was a topic of increasing concern among EU citizens.

Therefore, EFSA is holding a scientific colloquium with the following objectives:

bringing stakeholders together,
understanding the current state of play and ongoing research on this topic
building possible synergies,

The colloquium will take place online on 6 and 7 May 2021.

The Special Issue on “Plastic Contamination: Challenges and Solutions” focus on addressing all aspects of plastics

Plastics are popular synthetic materials due to their advantageous properties, such as low density and high durability, which have led to their increased use in multiple applications. Either in larger or smaller sizes, known as microplastics and nanoplastics, plastics are continuously released to the environment, where they accumulate due to their resistance to degradation. For this reason, plastics now contaminate virtually every ecosystem on the planet, being considered a marker for the Anthropocene. The accumulation of plastics in the environment can have negative effects on organisms and ecosystems directly through toxicity, or indirectly through habitat changes. Most of this contamination originates from an unsustainable use and management of plastics, from production to consumption and disposal, which needs to be restructured in the context of a circular economy.

This Special Issue invites novel contributions in the form of critical reviews and research papers to address all aspects of plastics, such as: (i) strategies or technologies to improve the production, use, and waste management of plastics; (ii) analytical methods for the assessment of micro/nanoplastics; (iii) concentrations and characteristics of micro/nanoplastics in the environment; (iv) ecotoxicological or abiotic effects of micro/nanoplastics; (v) the role of micro/nanoplastics as vectors of contaminants and pathogens. This Special Issue also welcomes contributions regarding changes in plastics policies, consumption, incorrect disposal, and waste management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deadline for manuscript submission is 1 April 2021. You may send your manuscript now or up until the deadline. Submitted papers should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. We also encourage authors to send a short abstract or tentative title to the Editorial Office in advance (environments@mdpi.com or lucine.lin@mdpi.com).

Plastic particles are almost omnipresent in our environment. Even though nanoplastic pollution also falls into this area of concern, current analytical approaches reach their limits in this size range.

To address the problem, Schwaferts et al. couple two analytical methods and combine nanoparticle separation with chemical characterization. The methodological setup presented in the paper enables researchers to identify particles of different materials (polymers and inorganic) in the size range from 200 nm to 5 μm, with concentrations in the order of 1 mg/L. The presented technique thus shows potential for application in nanoplastic analysis as well as in many other areas of nanomaterial characterization.

This paper by Schwaferts et al. addresses methodological gaps that exist in the analysis of microplastics. Specifically, it deals with the analysis of nanoparticles, as they are not covered by common analytical methods.

The authors provide an overview regarding the progress in environmental nanoplastic analysis and critically evaluate which techniques from nanomaterial analysis may potentially be adapted to close the methodological gap.

Furthermore, the paper contains a roadmap for methods covering the entire analysis process from sample treatment to particle characterization which includes:

methods for analyte extraction and preconcentration from various environmental matrices
methods for the separation of the nanoplastic into specific size fractions
light scattering techniques and various types of microscopy to characterize the particle fractions;
chemical identification of particles to validate the obtained data.
